Kristin M. Hammersmith, MD

Board Certified Ophthalmologist and Corneal Surgeon

Kristin Hammersmith, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship trained ophthalmologist specializing in advanced corneal transplantation, management of corneal infections and ocular surface disease.  She completed her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina, followed by medical school at the West Virginia School of Medicine.  She completed her ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University. She then completed her Cornea and External Disease Fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital.  She currently is an active member of the Cornea Service at Wills Eye Hospital and serves as an Associate Professor in Ophthalmology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University.

 

Dr. Hammersmith specializes in performing state-of-the-art corneal surgeries, including full-thickness corneal transplantation, partial thickness endothelial keratoplasty and DALK corneal transplants.  She has a strong interest in keratoprostheses, limbal stem cell transplantation and collagen crosslinking for the management of keratoconus and post-LASIK ectasia.  As a corneal specialist, she also treats corneal infections, corneal dystrophies, dry eye syndrome, and other diseases of the cornea and external eye.  She helps run a multidisciplinary ocular pemphigoid clinic, attracting patients from all over the world.

 

Dr. Hammersmith is a member of the Cornea Service at Wills Eye Hospital and serves as the Director of the Corneal Fellowship.  In addition to training corneal fellows, she is also actively involved in the training of ophthalmology residents.
